I’m probably going to surprise a few people here by admitting to be a Christian and also *not* defending Carrie Prejean–at least as far as the Miss California and Miss America pageants are concerned. I do believe it is her right to speak her mind, and I do not agree with the hideous, ad hominem attacks on her by celebrities and gay activists. On the other hand, however, Miss Prejean appears to be hiding behind the gay marriage issue (on which I happen to agree with her) in order to avert attention away from her apparent lack of honesty and integrity concerning her contracts with the pageants, which evidently required her to swear out that she had not taken nude or semi-nude photographs.

It may have been that her critics on the gay marriage issue were in fact digging for dirt in order to silence her, but no dirt should have been found, and Miss Prejean’s word should have proven to be her bond. That does not appear to be the case. I would cut her at least some slack by virtue of the fact that she was very young and perhaps naive when the photos were taken. But every aspiring model, actress, or other figure in the public eye must know that actions have consequences, and even though Donald Trump showed clemency and allowed Carrie to keep her runner-up tiara, those consequences could still be losing her Miss California title. And especially those who profess Christian faith and wish to take up the mantle for a cause like the preservation of marriage do that cause no favor by posing for photos that are of questionable value in that pursuit. Does anyone else here catch the irony?
