Help Us Fight For The First Amendment
THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, as someone who is extremely passionate about upholding the first amendment of the constitution, I have to wonder if you have heard about the happenings in the past week at Berkeley and UC Davis. Students at Davis were holding a peaceful protest, that was endorsed by the Davis Faculty Association, to speak out against an 81% tuition increase and police brutality earlier in the week at Berkeley, where people were bludgeoned, pepper sprayed, and beaten during a nonviolent protest. The Chancellor at UC Davis called the police to the site of the protest where pepper spray started being used on students who were simply linking arms and sitting in a circle on the ground. Police were beating protestors, and spraying pepper spray directly into their eyes and throats…one person continued throwing up blood for 10 hours after being sprayed. The person in the picture actually being pepper sprayed is a former classmate and friend that I have known for well over a decade, which is why I wanted to shed light to this particular issue. The first amendment to the constitution blatantly states that it is the “right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Because of the actions taken by the Chancellor, a junior faculty member of UC Davis has written a letter demanding them to resign, which has become available as a petition.
The hypocrisy of the Chancellor, along with the decision to bring armed authorities into a peaceful, nonviolent protest is absolutely deplorable. I know that there are thousands of people who view this site daily and if there is anyone who cares as much about upholding citizens’ first amendment rights, it’s you Nik. Please help us spread the word and sign this petition to show police and college faculty that we will not stand for anything less than what we are entitled to do by the first amendment of the constitution.

They warned them the day before they had to leave but they stayed. The people sitting said the cops blocked them in … from the looks of things it looks like pure students around them. The officer showed them the mace, warned them, then sprayed them. Your first amendment gives you a right to speak your mind but you still got break the law. People keep posting all these pictures of other people protesting and the difference is they are exercising first amendment rights within the means of the law. The last 2 months of Occupy is the same thing over and over… Protesters don’t listen to the police and feel they are above the law then get action taken and ride the wave of “the cops did me wrong” for the next week.

These idiots knew they were going to be pepper sprayed. They were given numerous warnings by the police after violating the agreement they had with the school. As far as i’m concerned they got what they deserved and now they wanna cry about it.

Just so you know, I work full time AND go to school full time, and will still be in a tremendous amount of debt after I graduate. Tuition hikes and privatization of the UC schools is not the answer for anybody except the school officials who will see major pay raises.

I think they’re idiots. While they sit there and protest I’m going to school and getting a job so I can better myself. Also, my major is that I am guaranteed a job when I graduate. A lot of these people don’t even know what they’re fighting for in the first place.

The UC Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan ensures that all systemwide tuition costs are covered with grants and gift aid for California undergraduates with annual family incomes of up to $80,000 who have financial need. In addition, to help middle-income students, UC Berkeley, like other UC campuses, has provided a one-year grant that will at least cover the 2011-12 tuition increase for students with family incomes between $80,000 and $120,000 who have financial need.
So basicaly WE THE TAX PAYERS ARE COVERING YOUR FINANCAIL AID …even with familys with incomes upto 120k.

wow there seems to be an excessive amount of sheep on this post. How you feel about the occupy movement doesnt matter. If you can look at this photo or watch the video of this and see exactly what happened and how they did nothing to deserve that then you need help.
I can’t believe some of the ignorant comments on here. I don’t know this issue extensively but they should not have been even prevented from protest. They were just sitting there. Even if they were sitting on a busy pathway, they are merely just sitting. others can walk pass them. They are not even talking or passing out flyers. WTF! Regardless of what they are protesting, they should at least be given a voice, and let the people to decide if they are right or wrong. The police are taught to use the pepper spray as a NON-VIOLENT way to deal with people.
As far as tuition is concerned…people getting the quality of education available at UC Davis for the price they charge…they should consider themselves lucky, even if the price goes up.
People graduate from UC Davis and go on to great careers at high paying jobs, and a large reason they got their foot into the door is because they attended a well-regarded institution.
Complain about tuition at Sac State? I get it. It’s bottom of the barrel stuff. But complain at a top of the line, public school– whose comparable private school counterparts charge a ton more for tuition– that is just stupid.
