I think anybody who is expressing their ignorance needs to do a bit of research before they comment on an entire race of people. Natives dont all get free education you have to qualify for it. Its not just natives on welfare there are alot of whites on it too. You can’t blame people for the way they are after being stripped of their culture and beleifs, verbally and sexually abused by people with the intentions of assimulating them into society and then pushed on reserves with crummy land unable to flourish. Our ancestors were not passive, they didnt know english, and if you were to look at the treaties it is hard to suggest it was signed and agreed to because where the name is signed it is just an “X”. You cannot say all natives are on welfare, drunks, drug addicts, and doing nothing but sitting on their asses. My mothers side of the family as far back as my great great grandfathers have worked for what they wanted or for what they needed. Granted not all of them were educated, heck some of them only went up to grade 7, but if they were not in school they were working eight hours a day sometimes longer. My grandfather and grandmother both worked hard to provide food and other neccessities for their seven children. My mother works two jobs to provide for my brother and sister who are still in school and at home they are 17 and 14 years old. I on the other hand have three jobs a full time and two casuals I am 19 years old. My family has all been brought up to work for the things you need, there is not a single person in my family who isn’t either working or in school. Anyways my point is my family is not a generalization nor are they a statistic, we all worked hard to get ourselves to where we are today, also I know many successful natives, Derek Miller, Adam Beach, Chris Beach, Don Amero, Cheryl Bear, Sierra Noble, Don Burnstick, Lou Phillip Diamonds, and there are more than that. In conclusion don’t assume that all natives are drunks, druggies, and on welfare I know so so so many that are not.

U of M medicine program LOWERED the minimum required GPA and MCAT last year for Native american applicants which already had a huge advantage / lower standards. This happens in all faculties.

Just a few quick thoughts here after reading some of the preceding comments that have been submitted by those with differing opinions. While I know there is resentment about welfare and incentive programs, unless Aboriginal people are provided with opportunities to succeed, they will continue to be marginalized and on the outside of the prevailing culture. The fact that peoples’ perception are that these programs are a failure speak to the fact that maybe the success stories aren’t highlighted AND also to the possibility that there exists a profound ignorance about what the alternatives are currently.
Many have said “end the welfare, dissolve the programs” that permit aboriginal people to obtain entry into the professions and “make them work” like everyone else. While this sounds like a pragmatic approach to the indignation many white people say they have, the end costs, I fear would be more than the total of the finances currently applied for First Nations people. Increasing the misery and despair among Aboriginal people will not resolve any of these problems, except maybe the ones that exist in the attitudes of those who ignore not only the colonization of this land; the manner in which it was done but also the horror, abuse and cultural genocide that was perpetrated in the Residential Schools and the fallout that conrinues to be felt even today. It is too lengthy a topic to get into here but people who ignore the intra- and intergenerational products of these actions do so because they want to and perhaps because to do so allows them to maintain their current erroneous views.
I could go one “ad nauseum” here but I will end with one simple thought for both sides (even though members of the prevailing culture may hate me for this), the proposal that funding be terminated is not as simple an exercise as many would imagine. Changing the funding and credit program will require changes to the British North America Act. These provisions can be ignored but they are part of THE founding document upon which all of our Constitutional Law is predicated upon. Even today, many fail to appreciate that some of Canada’s major cities are built upon land that was never really conceded through treaty. Thus to legally change the way the DIA is run, great changes will need to be made to one of the founding documents of this country. I suspect many who read this will know how hard it can be to obtain ANY kind of consenus on matters that pertain to Constitutional Ammendments. At the end of the day, the state that First Nations people find themselves in is, I think, a national disgrace for Canada on the world stage. It certainly weakens the image we pride ourselves upon about being a compassionate, humanitarian, peace making “middle power” (for those of you that have an interest or background in Foreign Policy). I belive there is room for improvement; that greater cooperation is needed. I don’t know if greater education is required for those who seek it in the “White” segment of society. I wish I had more to offer apart from this. What I can say is that if we continue to focus upon those particulars that divide us instead of those common traits of humanity that unite us (and a few people have mentioned here that we breath the same air, bleed the same blood and feel the same pain when those near to us are hurt: good for them as it is an encouraging sentiment) we will have a much harder time overcoming some of the barriers that prevent us from a mutual respect, a common recognition that both peoples have something integral to offer the present culture and that BOTH white people AND First Nations people already contribute in a way that makes our society a richer one and one that is far more inclusive than it was even a few decades earlier. What is required now is to promote a healthy dialogue rather than nurture a poisonous perception between PEOPLE who have so much in common, if we only look for it. Maybe I am out of touch with reality, I don’t know. What I do know is that the hatred that is employed by some here could be more useful if their energy was put to constructive ends. I envision the day when the bitterness and jealousy will end. I would like to see a time come when the contribution of First nations People are recognized and celebrated and that the anger one side feels for another will end. Anyway that’s my two cents worth (well maybe a bit more than that).

Working in medicine – you have a responsibility to your workplace to provide support to anyone, regardless of race or creed and to treat all people with respect – even if none is given. Threatening to kick someone’s ass, telling them to f*&k off and stating you now have more reason to hate white’s (insinuating you already hated them in the first place) is unjust. I too work at HSC and know they provide the best care they can to all and to hear comments from someone who is supposedly a caregiver or in a line of care based work – is unprofessional and unethical and makes your employer look badly.
