I know my Canadian History, and I honestly can say I am probably 2% of white people who feel really bad for what they have done to the Native Culture. I have read books in school about how your people were treated, but I think it’s time to move on. We (as in Aboriginal Peoples) should also live up to the name of survivors. We should not fall victims to the residential schools and let it be our excuse to not succeed. We should learn to be survivors and prosper and show everyone that no matter what they cannot break us. What I don’t agree with is how you assume that all aboriginal people do not pay taxes. This only applies to the Aboriginal Peoples whom work on their reserve. You have to live and work on your reserve and also have band membership. Other Aboriginals such as the Metis and the Inuit are not qualified under the treaty act. I am an Aboriginal person and I reside in Winnipeg. I work and I do pay taxes. Stop assuming that all Aboriginal Peoples are the same.

as a person who has worked with the revenue agency of canada, i can tell you first hand that yes, native people do pay taxes, so STOP saying they dont, HOWEVER, wont native wont tell you, THEY GET TONS AND TONS OF TAX BREAKS if they are native and they get even more tax breaks if they are native and live on a reserve. Yes, there are whities that live on reserves also. Basically, living on a reserve natives dont have to pay any taxes but once they come into the city they have to pay taxes but they get a tax break with their treaty card. If they dont have the treaty status they have to pay tax, but most of them do and having that treat card is like platinum, they will never lose that.

A native person with a treaty card still has to pay the txes on the house and property when they buy a house outside the reserve, there is no tax breaks there. I can’t say its the same for other provinces but here in Mb this is how it works. You just simply go into any store, buy something and then show your treaty card at the cash register to get a tax break, it does not work that way, never did.

I have friends in BC, ALB, ON, and Quebec and they all tell me natives are a burden on the economy and account for a majority of the welfare recipients. Ok, so I know the Fontaine sisters and let me tell you, they are gorgeous, successful well educated women. The older 3 have real degrees, they weren’t “dumbed” down for them. Ali is beautiful, talented, smart and if people can’t deal that’s their problem. She’s a good student and the whole family has great jobs and yes they do pay taxes. The man beside Ali in the pic is her father, not a Chief. Ali has worked hard to gain the success she has and she deserves it.
