THE DIRTY ARMY: Dear Nik, I am a hard working tax payer and I have to drive far away to get to work daily and Im sick of our broken down streets. Our politicians are dumb, our mayor Sam Katz just wants to put money into new projects and beautifying downtown, when really our streets are crumbling and some streets are not safe to drive on. The bad news is that the city is planning to put less money into local streets this year ($10 million, down from $12 million in 2011), according to the 2012 capital budget.

Too many dumb ass people who wanted lower taxes and a tax freeze voted for this money grabbing businessman and he ended up raising property taxes ANYWAY. And added a bunch of other bullshit costs along with that. He puts money into places that benefit him personally, not the city. Some people do not realize that the whole business private sector hurts the governments in the long run. Socialist governments in Sweeden and other countries have way better statistics for health, education and poverty.
This man knows exactly what he is talking about. Our political system is basically an easy way for corporations and companies to skip in front of line and profit off things that we need for basic survival.
Look at manitoba autopac. One of the few government run insurance operations in the country, and also the cheapest for the people. In ontario people pay on average double what we do in Manitoba.

There are companies that can fix our roads for decades, instead of years, but who can profit of tax money if there arent any roads to constantly fix?

Roads/Transportation are basically the most important thing to a government because it basically is the basis of everything for the society to work. Before you start ripping on people on welfare maybe you should read up on the subject a little bit. Roads and maintenance are the responsibility of the municipal government (hence why people are trash talking the mayor). Social Assistance (or welfare as you so ignorantly put it) is paid by tax dollars from the provincial government. You would think the term Manitoba housing would be a dead give away

I know what I’m talking about. I work two jobs and cant afford internet or a blackberry. I have witnessed a welfare mother party away a $900 cheque only to get another issued days later so she could pay her bills. Welfare should not cover a vehicle or any other non necessity. Want a “decent standard”, earn it. By the way, congrats on trying to better yourself and hope you do better than you are but there is no way that tax payers should fund you or any others to have all those things plus getting subsidies that the working population doesn’t receive. People that are on social assistance should get living needs and living needs only. That is the bottom line so don’t try and sugar coat it to make yourself or other recipients feel better.
There should be a limited as to how long people can be on “assistance” -maybe extended under certain circumstances. In MY OPINION people who stay on welfare are lazy bums. They do waste the majority of the money given to them, and they contribute nothing to society. They get used to not having to work, and why go back to work when you can sit around all day, do nothing, and still get paid? Nevermind that they are OVER PAID. If you need assistance fine, but it should cover bare minimum costs -not be able to afford you a car, cable, internet, fancy cell phone etc. It should only require your necessaries: Food, water, electricity, bus pass, and a SMALL amount of spending money, which should be saved and automatically put in an account they cant touch until their welfare days expire.

we live in a technological era not the stone age. applying for jobs isn’t what you need to apply but say daycare subsidy or student loans…got to apply online. if you go to school and you have to write papers that are asked to be emailed by a prof. Lets take it an additional step once they have kids they lease them to people so they can add as dependents on Taxes. Went downtown today, all I saw was a bunch of different races of people, walking around in nicer clothes. I’m going to assume they don’t know how to read though. And because they were walking, I will assume that they’re poor, and assistance recipients. I will also assume that because they are walking, they don’t have a vehicle. the new stadium cost 185 million dollars.. which is a total of 4% of the citys annual budget. 185 million dollars looks like a lot of money but in reality its barely a fraction of the annual budget. think of the jobs and revenue it will bring plus bring tourism and increase the sports progam at the U of M for youth. the water park does the same, increases tourism, job creation and is positively benefical. i totally agree that the roads blow and more money needs to be allocated into public works, but spending our tax money on a stadium and waterpark is postively benefical in the long run. the pros outride the cons on creation of these things

Average amount paid by welfare is between 400-1000$ (or more depending how many kids they have) so, between 8 – 20 million a year should be a fair Guess-timate… That number goes up every year… Hell, as we’re sPeaking, 10-20 more welfare recipients are being concieved or delivered… Nothing will ever change if all of us continue to let it happen

Nevermind receipts, there should be no cash welfare whatsoever. Provide food stamps, clothing, public housing, and one gift certificate a month for the movies. Visited Winnipeg back in 09 walked three blocks from the radission to moxie’s all i saw were groups of chugs drunk and pilled out bumming money.Everyone kept telling go to the forks its nice .. it was allright but nothing to write home about i feel bad for people who live in Winnipeg there is nothing there ,downtown is a joke .I see that the govt is trying to get all the new immigrants to move to manitoba and saskatchewan ..good luck to them again i feel bad for people that live in both provinces lets hope someday the govt will cut off handouts to chugs and they actually have to work to survive !
