THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, I should have done this a long time ago but I thought I would be the bigger person. Now I choose not to care. This horrible excuse for a woman works at the Victoria SPCA. This is a place where you would think good things happen… Penny Stone loves to make people who can’t afford treatment for their pets feel like they are the scum of the world. My lab cross jumped out my 3rd story window because of blasting I later found out. I immediately took him to the vets where they told me nothing was broken, but he would probably need surgery. At this point I am a single mom with a 1 year old. No way in hell could I afford $10,000 for a surgery the vet told me might not help. I spent the next couple of weeks in hopes that something would change. My dog couldn’t walk to I had to carry him (80lbs) three floors down to go outside or to bring him to work because I refused to leave him alone again. After I couldn’t take it anymore my shrink convinced me to call the SPCA to see what options I had. I got the stupid b*tch Penny…she actually yelled at me on the phone, and told me I could be fined if I didn’t bring the dog right to her! This b*tch has NO censor. She thinks she is god to animals. I ended up surrendering him to the SPCA a few days later after breaking down and thinking I had no other options. If Penny had been there or said one effing thing to me I would have left. I thought the hard part was over, I thought they were going to put my dog down and that would be the end. But no, Penny decided to go on the news which she seems to love, and told Victoria that Buddie had been neglected and never taken to any vet…all this for donations to the SPCA. This stupid b*tch lied over and over again, even though they had all the info I gave them. When I went down to confront Penny over her lies, she wouldn’t even talk to me. This liar won’t even look me in the face! I have since gotten an apology from the SPCA and have talked to Buddies new adopter so I know hes doing great now and away from super c*nt. I am not the only one Penny has done this to. This is her thing to play god with peoples animals and make them feel as sh*tty as possible for needing help when they don’t have money. At the end of the day, I could have gone to the news and public and begged for money and I may still have my dog. I don’t understand why she is still working for the SPCA, also considering she has been fired from previous jobs for STEALING! Nik please put this b*tch on blast for being a horrible human being! Op’s dog was at the vet, had pain meds and round the clock care, including a babysitter while she worked. The bandages and harness the dog is wearing were bought by OP and donated with him. She is still sitting on many hundreds of dollars in bills, and will be for a while. The SPCA is not on the Dirty, Penny the Bitch made it, for playing up his story, and grossly crawling all over him for attention. Bad and very expensive things can happen to pets and there is such a thing as pet insurance if you can’t afford to pay for such unfortunate and unplanned expenses upfront. You have to take that into account before having a pet. If you can’t afford to care for a pet like it should be cared for, don’t get one. Why did you let your dog suffer for two weeks before seeking help? You don’t deserve a medal of honor for carrying it up the stairs. You let it suffer for TWO WEEKS! Your dog deserves the apology for being left to suffer for two weeks, not you.
I’m glad your dog is still alive and is now happy because of the SPCA, which is a wonderful organization. The SPCA can’t control the tact of all its employees, unfortunately. It sounds like you DID take your dog to the vet and that your dog DID NOT have any broken bones, so I don’t know what these people are bitching about with you supposedly not having pet insurance or neglecting your dog when your dog DID receive medical care. READ, STUPID PEOPLE! The vet said the surgery probably wouldn’t even help. You lovingly carried your dog everywhere hoping the condition would better on its own, AS DIRECTED BY YOUR VET, until you couldn’t take it anymore. Perhaps the vet misdiagnosed the dog, or didn’t read the x-rays correctly. That would NOT be the owner’s fault. You did as directed by your vet (and your therapist, apparently). I bet after all the cosmetic surgery Penny Stone’s obviously had, she wouldn’t be able to afford 10k for dog surgery or even pet insurance herself. Penny didn’t help your dog; the SPCA did. I wouldn’t thank her for anything. All Penny did was lie to get people to donate to the SPCA, which people SHOULD do, but not coersed into doing by a lying, exagerating, misrepresenting, irresponsible employee. I hope she gets fired. The dog needed extensive surgery to repair his legs – ruptured ligaments are just as painful, and serious, as broken bones. Leaving him for weeks untreated is cruel. Watching your 80 lb dog suffer, not able to walk, or move, is disgusting. I would guess that the vet who saw him initially assumed that some decisions would be made asap, and the dog would not be left to suffer for weeks. The Victoria SPCA helps 1000s of animals every year – most of which are the victims of irresponsible people such as Buddy’s previous owner. Buddy is pain-free and happy in a new home now – what are you still arguing about? Would you prefer that he be dead????

The cost of pet insurance is not $15 a month, try $30-$40 for a single dog, discounts come with multiple pets. How many people have pet insurance ? I do, but i also max out my RRSP’s, TFSA’s and pay an extra 10% on my mortgage, plus a principle lump sum payment every year. I prepare and calculate every decision I make, most don’t. In Canada 56% of households have a dog, a cat, or both, while only an 2% of cat owners and 4% of dog owners have pet insurance, 21% have never even heard of it. This woman is hardly a shitty pet owner. Your local SPCA kills (sorry, humanely puts down) hundreds of neglected or unwanted animals a year, BC alone has 40 SPCA’s. That would probably amount to more than 10,000 animals nationwide being put down per year. While personal and household debt in Canada is at an all time high, do you really think even those pet owners with the best intentions are going to be able to pay $10K for an animals surgery ? especially a single mother of a 1yr. old ? I think you people should get off your high horse and think about the situation if it actually happened to you ! It’s easy to condemn those actually put in these tough situations, but it takes a lot more to see both sides and actually show some empathy.
Of course there are not very many people who are able to afford pricey vet bills. That is easily understood and recognized. The problem is, when you have an organization, like the Vic. SPCA, that is available to help your animal, who is SUFFERING, WHY would you leave your dog is distress for WEEKS???!! This isn’t the 3rd world – there are resources right around the corner who could have helped immediately. It’s heartbreaking to have to give up your dog, but if you are a thoughful person you would recognize that this is the most loving thing you could do. I’m just confused about how someone could be witness to such suffering, for so long, and only be concerned about themselves?? Spending money to visit a Shrink??? It is so distrubing when people are so selfish that they make everything about THEMSELVES.
If you made it through that comment, here’s a follow up. 4% of dog owners have pet insurance, meaning 96 out of 100 dog owners in Canada DO NOT have pet insurance. How many of those 96 do you believe can drop $10,000 on a dog’s surgery ? If less than 6% of Canadians make 100,000 per year or more according to revenue Canada, which we all know is only about $70,000 take home. How many of those making 100K could afford more than 14% of their yearly income for a dog’s surgery ? If you take the average Canadians salary per year it’s even more impossible. $42,000 is about $35,000 take home. This equates to 28.5%, which is just about the recommended MAXIMUM amount of ones income to be payed towards HOUSING ! I can hear the computer warriors furiously typing away that one should never get a pet if they can’t afford it. Well then you better start marching down the street and condemning your neighbours, your family and probably yourself. If you want to play the pet insurance card, read my last post and suck it. Those are the FACTS, I hope an accident like this never happens to your dog, because we all know what will happen. Well not all of you,…..let’s see 96 out of 100 no insurance, only 6 out of 100 make 100K (70K after taxes) 56% have a pet, so we’ll be nice and give you 3 out of 100 with MAYBE enough money to realistically afford it. Oh you’ll make monthly payments ? well make that surgery 12K with interest, but only if your credit is good. Bottom line, I WIN, sad but true, facts and stats never lie.
I can’t speak for everyone here, but, yes, I have had unplanned medical conditions happen to my dogs that have totaled in the thousands, and you best believe I pulled together the money required for their care. I don’t have pet insurance, but instead do set aside a bit of money every month for stuff exactly like this. And before someone goes off and tells me that it is not possible for everyone to set aside money, then don’t put a helpless animal’s well-being into your own hands. Period. I would love to have a Maserati, but can’t afford one, so I don’t have one. You aren’t entitled to have everything you want in life just because what you want exists in the world. And you are one lucky SOB if you can go through life owning a pet and it not having major medical expenses at one or more points in time. That type of stuff isn’t limited to humans.
I did read this original post fully and still think how the owner handled Buddie’s situation of letting him go in pain for weeks is complete bullshit, and I applaud the ASPCA for saving this dog. Granted this Penny woman went on the offensive, she was probably just so distraught by the f’ed up situation that she couldn’t hold her emotions. Whatever, though, she saved the pup.

I can only imagine how I would have handled the call if I were Penny, and someone said that they had let their dog suffer for weeks. It sounds to me like Victoria is so lucky to have such an awesome SPCA, and community, where funds can be pulled together and dogs with such heft vet bills aren’t left to suffer or worse euthanized.

Her dog was helped and, from what I remember with the TC, this happenned almost a year ago! The poster sounds like the most angry unstable person of the bunch and I hope she doesn’t teach her child to deal with problems the same way she does. As a member of the Victoria community, and someone who is a strong supporter of the Victoria SPCA, I find it highly offensive that Penny Stone’s morals and character are being slandered – I would love to see the poster held liable for her actions. The work done by the Victoria SPCA is invaluable to the animals in our community, and all across this province. The poster has repeatedly devalued the status of animals and has made it clear, over and over again, that she is someone who cares very little about how animals are treated (or, for that matter, people, based on the way she communicates with others).

Im poor and own dogs and some how make it work. I always have a bit of money put away for any vet bill 1’000$ or under. If its more then I start selling my music equipment and other assets. I also have a good vet that will set me up with a payment plan too if I dont have all the money right away. I have a history of always paying off my debts so my family would lend me money if I needed it for vet bills. They did it for me a few years ago when I was stuck with a vet bill of 3,000 $ I payed them back within a few months and did a lot of busking to raise money. Prepare before getting a pet! Pet insurence is even better then the above mentioned. Dogs are our best friend. So treat them as such. My parents are spending 4 grand on chemo for their dog who has cancer just tp extend his life by a few years (even though it might not) and hes responding very well to it. I think Karma will be good to my parents and they will have many healthy years with their dog

The Victoria SPCA is FULL of idiot people. I have a border collie and went to adopt another one. They laughed in my face and completely denied me getting a collie because I have kids. They said I wouldn’t have time for a border with a family…Wellllll I’m not one of those parents that uses kids as a disability and we are more then active enough. They showed me 4 different pit bulls instead. They say don’t discriminate against pit bulls but they were COMPLETELY discriminating against border collies.
Long story short that dog is still in the SCPA and I went to breeder. My kids and Collies are a perfect match.
Firstly you should not own a dog of this size and live on a 3rd floor PERIOD! Proper care for this dog’s life requires a fenced yard where the dog is freee to run,play and be a dog.

Yes the victoria SPCA can be annoying as much as they can be helpful, they have pissed off many in victoria, and have sadly turned many people away from the SPCA. Some of the staff can be really demeaning and unfriendly. The last time i was there, the whole place reeked of dog piss, it was unbearable! They wouldn’t let anyone in to see the cats/kittens either, and I have heard countless stories of them turning away potential adoptions for rediculous condecending reasons.They really need to investigate how the funds are collected, spent,allocated and how the Victoria SPCA is being run, something REALLY stinks in that building, and its at the expence of the vulnerable animals.

As much as I don’t agree with the fact that this poor animal didn’t receive the care he needed, people need to cool their jets.
First of all, how do we know that when she got the dog, she was living in this apartment? It could have been an unfortunate situation, and she was forced to move into an apartment but wished to keep her dog, hoping that she would not be there for long.
Secondly, where does it say she had her dog locked outside on the balcony when he jumped? I didn’t read it, yet someone commented on it as if it was a truth. She said window, not balcony. An 80 pound dog could fit through a window.
Thirdly, the vet said that he needed surgery BUT it may not help. Of course she’s going to hope that he got better, and she did her best. Yes, she should have seeked help, and yes she should have not let it go on for as long as she did, but she did not fully neglect like many others would/do.
And fourth: Penny Stone. How many of you did not read this? Penny Stone is a cruel, cruel woman. She doesn’t have an actual heart, just likes to think she does. My cat went missing and ended up in the SPCA and she refused, REFUSED to give him back to my family, claiming we neglected him when he was in perfect health and was not hurt in any way. We finally got him back after having to go over our head. My second cat ended up being poisoned by our neighbour, and we were treated like shit when we brought him in. Told once again that we were terrible people because someone poisoned him.
This poster has the absolute right to be upset about the way Penny Stone treated her, and as much as you are pointing the finger at her, Penny Stone shouldn’t be allowed to work with people, and she should be brought up for telling lies to make herself look like the better person.

i fostered an SPCA cat that was expecting kittens..when she found out – she wanted to have them aborted two weeks before they were due to be born! She is a sick effin cunt!
I love my dog more than humans. My 60 lb dog lived in a 4th floor apartment for 5 months while I was recently looking for a house and he loved it! We were downtown near the beach, close to the sea wall, we would go downtown into the city, he went to work with me, he went everywhere with me. I wouldn’t bash this woman for her choice of house, because many dogs large and small thrive in apartments depending on their owners lifestyle and the care. I do agree that a few weeks is a little long to wait before making a decision, but no one on here as any right to judge this poor woman because we do not know what she was doing in those weeks. Was she applying for a loan? Was she trying to sell a vehicle, or some sort of asset? We do not know. It can be hard to pull togethor money, especially $10,000. I think she did the right thing, even if it took 2 weeks longer than it should. I am sure the vet would have given her pain medication for her dog after she took him there the first time.
Onto Penny Stone and the many other cranky old women working at VIC SPCA:
As many have commented here and confirmed, this is an awful woman. I recently adopted a kitten who was left in an empty house after someone moved out, and went in to get a neutering voucher for him, as many people do. I am low income, and do have a amount of money saved for my pets emergencies, but am entitled to a $50 voucher from the SPCA. With shots and boosters and neutering I still had a vet bill of nearly $300 to cover. The ladies working at the SPCA made me feel like I was to poor and an inadequate care giver. This should not be the case. The employees at the SPCA who are offering this service, should be glad to help those in need. The SPCA does not have any room for any more kittens, cats, or dogs. By adopting animals, we are making room for others in need to have help.
I don’t understand why people keep bickering on here. The Vic SPCA needs an attitude adjustment. Let’s stop focusing on what Buddy’s prior owner did or didn’t do, and start focusing on helping the many other animals out there that cannot provide for themselves.

Penny Stone… This woman is a piece of work. She is a horrible human being and used any animal story sad enough to make the news to get her fake collagen filled face on the TV to look like God’s savior for all these animals. What about all of those other animals in there? Do you ever hear about them on the news? No because the story isn’t big enough to make her look like she’s a hero. Its disgusting and she needs to get the fuck out of there and let someone do the job who actually cares about the animals well being more than face time with a camera.
P.S. I’m not going to talk about the owner and her situation because this posting was made to show Penny’s true colors, not to have a bunch of people type all these unbelievably rude and vicious opinions on what they think should have been done. When really, what proof do they have? What the news said (which came from Penny)? No hard evidence or personal proof. So your opinions are flawed. Plus, it’s real easy to voice your opinions loud and crude when your behind an anonymous username. I bet if you were face to face with anyone your directing your comments to, you wouldn’t be so forward.
