THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, we need your help! During the month of August Anna was traveling with a group of friends in Europe. On August 17, 2012, she was on a board of “Adriatic Queen” catamaran in Croatian water. Anna accidentally slipped off of a 3 meters high catamaran and hit her head on the ledge and fell into the ocean. She went uncouncious instantly. Currently Anna is in a coma with internal brain bleeding and numerous head and face fractures in a hospital in Split, Croatia. She hooked up to a life support machine and is in critical condition. Unfortunately, Anna didn’t have travel insurance and her family and friends do not have the financial capacity to cover the massive costs of treatment in Europe and transportation by Air Ambulance from Croatia to Toronto. WE HAVE TO BRING HER HOME so that she can get the proper care and medical attention she deserves. The Canadian embassy doesn’t care about the situation, so it’s up to us to raise money. This is utter crap, Croatia, like alot of other European countries has a univerisal health care system.
For example i live in England and if say an American has an accident over here, they wouldn’t have to pay the costs. Same with Croatia, this is a sick scam!

I donated.. I know exactly what its like to get hurt somewhere other then Canada and have to deal with the financial ramifications due to lack of health insurance. A good friend of mine broke her leg in America and had to take a plane ride with a fractured fibula all the way back home. The cost of the ambulance one way to the hospital was $3200 which cost more than the trip itself.
I pay $16.00 for 5 days when i’m in the states and that covers me up to $1,000,000, It also covers the cost and flies out my beneficiary if needed. ALWAYS BUY TRAVELLERS INSURANCE!

I am sorry about this situation, if it’s actually real, and hopefully things work out. But that being said – STOP TRAVELLING WITHOUT INSURANCE!! Travel insurance is so cheap and easy to get! Whether you are on a vacation, or an escort, or whatever, get insurance always.

I am sorry about the situation IF IT IS IN FACT REAL. I just dont understand how one travels to europe with travels insurance, and why would they put up these photos as a plea for help? Two things:
1) It seems odd that any air travel would be suggested for a patient who is post SDH. While it can be done in the case of a dire med-evac emergency… moving a patient after a “brain bleed” is ill advised for usually 2-4 weeks as the pressure changes from take off and landing can cause adverse effects and possibly re-open the bleed. I don’t think any doctor at any facility would risk this for any reason (financial or otherwise) so this makes me very suspect of this whole story.
2) I googled this girl’s name and got a hit for another post elsewhere on The Dirty: “Anna Marie got Caught” from June of 2012 but got an “image error” so I couldn’t see the picture. In the comments they refer to the subject by the same name as the girl in the Croatian head injury post.

You sustain those type of injuries from a severe beating, not a fall from 3 m. Have any of you ever been on a catamaran?? I have many times and I’ve never seen a protruding 3m ledge.

I honestly can not believe that globally we are so backwards to think a universal policy requiring that anyone seeking entry into another country must have proof of insurance. I think it’s better if her close family and friends all finaced all their assets (house, car) instead of asking people for money on the internet. She made the mistake of not purchasing the travel insurance so you have to live up to the consequences. Her parents could of also ensured that she did have travel insurance before she left her trip. There is documents on facebook where it shows the hospital stay but who knows maybe that doctor that helped her was the one who wrote that up for her so he can get a peice of the pie.
