The gateway drug theory has been dismissed by most experts. Pot is only a gateway drug because it is illegal. Because one must go to an illegal dealer to get their pot, they may be exposed to, or offered, harder drugs. If you could go down to the convenience store and buy a pack of joints you would never have to meet any dealers, and would never be in a position to buy anything harder.
