We Are Losing Our Founding Principles
THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, our country needs to go back to our founding principles and cut back on big government. In countries dominated by the Government, the same companies, the same people, the same families dominate those nations and their economies generation after generation. But here, at least until recently, anyone from anywhere can accomplish anything. In this country as one of our founding principles you should be able to go as far as your talent and hard work will take you. These are principles that go to the ever core of who were are as a people and as a nation. Every country in the world as rich people, and unfortunately every country in the world has poor people. But only America has been able to produce such a vast generational middle class time and again. Only in America have we seen so many people go from being an employee to an employer, from a worker to an owner. It goes to the very core of what makes us different and special and makes us so different from the rest of the world. If we lose that, we lose one of the things that made us different and those were the stakes of this election. You can not grow the middle class, you can not make it safer, you can not pull people out of poverty with an economy that is dominated by the government. It has never worked and it isn’t going to work here. In times like these we would be wise to remember what the world was like before America. For almost 6,000 years of recorded history everyone who ever lived was poor. Only a handful of people were every wealthy or powerful and it was always the same people. The closer you were to Government the better off you were and everyone else was on the outside looking in. Your rights were whatever your ruler told you your rights were. If your parents were poor, you would be poor. If your parents worked a certain profession, that’s what you would do as well. That began to change 230 years ago, when in this country these extraordinary men wrote the words that all men were created equal, because they were given at birth certain rights that came from God, not from Government, not from their politicians and not from their leaders. Sometimes when that’s all you have known its easy to forget, and you think it’s always been this way. But for almost all of human history no one believed that. The freedom, the liberties that we share and our prosperity has been the exception not the rule, through all of human history. It did not happen by accident, because those weren’t just words on a piece of paper. They were governing guiding principles from which we formed a Republic of limited government and divided power. These principles also helped us develop and economic system called the free enterprise system. It’s a system that’s based on the simple principle that it doesn’t matter where you start out in life. It doesn’t matter if your parents were poor, or even if you were poor. You can go as far as your talent and hard work will take you. Where you can write a business plan on a piece of paper, take your life savings, max out your credit card, take a risk, and guess what it works. The system works. It works when people have confidence in the future. When you have a government that makes it easy for you to do that. When we don’t have a complicated tax code and regulatory code that is so burdensome and so expensive, that people would rather keep their money in the bank than invest it. When the government makes those things easier, people say that they can create jobs given these rules and they are willing to take that risk. Under Obama and his big government policies of higher taxes, Obamacare, and burdensome regulations, people are worried and scared that things will never be the same again. But the truth is they don’t have to be the same again, they can be better than they have ever been. There is no reason why our kids and even us cant be the safest and most prosperous Americans who have ever lived. All we need to do is change the people who are in charge, get our fiscal house in order, but that is not going to happen as long as we keep electing big government politicians like President Obama. Normally I read these comments & don’t respond, but this post caught my eye, & jman’s coment pissed me off. jman, you are a moron who obviously gets your news from bill maher, john stewart, huffington post, & the like. I am employed as a financial analyst for a major American company. (Forbes Global 2000 ranks us as the third largest in the world). In the past 2 years, we have added more than 175 positions to the financial analyst department. in the USA alone. Why? Because they are that worried by what is happening to our country. To educate jman, here are a few FACTS that can easily be verified. 1) Obama has added more regulations & red tape in his first 4 years than Bush did in 8 years. For you to claim otherwise is ignorant & stupid. This can easily be verified. 2) Guys like Rockefeller & Carnegie (NOT carniege as you spelled it) were worth so much because THEY WORKED HARD for it. They had a vision & ideas, & knew what would take root in a capitalist system. They developed many things that made our country grow & become better. You talk as though they were evil because of how much money they were worth. I’m sick of all the “rich people are evil & don’t deserve what they have” mentality that is reinforced on a daily basis by the media & this president. (See his comment in the presidential debate to Romney about “I don’t know about my retirement benefits. They’re not as big as yours”). When you work hard & have the knowledge & vision, you will make money. There is nothing evil about that. By starting companies & factories, these people not only grew their own wealth, they helped others grow wealth as well. Through stcks & jobs, they provided money & jobs. They gave opportunities to people. Who in their rigfht mind starts out in life wanting to only end up middle class? “I want to grow up & be a middle class earning father who can provide just enough for my kids & family to get by”. We should each aim to be the best we can be. Because some people choose to do drugs, drink, not go to college, not work, or never aspire to do more than work a minimum wage job, that does not mean the people who do more with their lives are evil. Some people are born into tougher situations. They will have to work harder. It is up to them. 3) Obamacare WILL skyrocket unemployment. It is already happening. Applebee’s has begun to cut their employees hours in order to reduce their operating cost because they will have to pay much more under obamacare. They have also instituted a hiring freeze. Papa John’s is also cutting hours & pay for the same reasons. Many companies in this country are doing the same. This will lead to higher unemployment because companies will be hiring less people & giving them less hours. Some people will try to work 2 or more jobs to make up for the loss. Again, this means that with someone taking up 2 jobs, more people will be out of work. Also, during a jointsession of congress in 2009, obama asserted the following: “Now, add it all up, and the plan I’m proposing will cost around $900 billion over 10 years — less than we have spent on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and less than the tax cuts for the wealthiest few Americans that Congress passed at the beginning of the previous administration.” WRONG. This was an outright lie because no we know president obama’s landmark healthcare overhaul is projected to cost $1.76 trillion over a decade, reports the Congressional Budget Office, a hefty sum more than the $940 billion estimated when the healthcare legislation was signed into law. To put it mildly, ObamaCare’s projected net worth is far off from its original estimate — in fact, about $820 billion off. There is no way he could have made that big of a miscalculation when he originally announced obamacare. This WILL lead to even higher unemployment numbers & healthcare rationing. He has already made numerous comments about people “being old enough, having lived a good life. Maybe you should just go home & take a pain pill so someone younger can get the treatment instead”. I promise you, obamacare will bankrupt & destroy our country the USA. 4) Finally, when you max out your credit cards & file for bankruptcy, it is the debtors that are stuck with the debt. If you run up a credit card at Target & file for bankruptcy & can’t pay it, it is not the taxpayers that pay it. Target now must absorb that debt, & try to collect it. They might sell your debt to one of thousands of collection companies for pennies on the dollar, who in turn will try to recover the debt from you, usually by offering a settlement. Companies plan for this in their business plan, & some are even insured for it. Companies lose more from shoplifters & internal theft every year than they do from non-payment of creditcards. Technically, the public pays more for companies to recover their loss from theft & frivolous lawsuits every year. The statement you made is just plain wring & stupid. It is ecomnomics 101, & you failed. If anything, the government bailing General Motors out of bankruptcy cost the taxpayers millions of dollars that we will NEVER get back. I hope this educates you a bit so can have a conversation about this without looking & sounding like a complete fool. You are welcome, & class dismissed!!

Some government regulation is needed in a free-market economy like the one U.S. has. In the time of national disaster, who would you like to come bail you out other than FEMA? And it’s funny you encourage people to do their research when you do not. Canada’s tax rate is tiered based on income. The highest rate of tax in Canada is 29% for those making over $132k a year. And what the hell is wrong with them using tax money for health insurance? At least its for the greater good. Right no you have NO SAY in how your tax money is spent!
A lot of people in the U.S. say, “why should I have to pay for someone else’s health insurance or food?” People in Canada don’t have a say so what is done with their money, neither do the people in the U.K. Their money goes to socialized medicine and military and somehow that is okay, but not in America? There could never be only a small percentage of government involvement or let the states govern themselves, look what happened in the 50′s. Racial segregation, prior to that, women had no rights, prior to that slavery.

You say taxes are lower because of Obama actually Obama, doesn’t deserve all the credit. The tax cuts were triggered by George W. Bush, when all combined federal taxes (income, payroll, excise and individuals’ share of corporate income taxes) hit their highest rate in 2000 as a result of Clinton’s tax policy. And in regards to the USA thriving? The International Finance Corporation and the World Bank ranked 183 countries in 11 areas; the United States didn’t finish first in any of them, ending up fourth behind Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand in ease of doing business, 20th in trade across borders, and a dismal 72nd in paying taxes.

Government spending as a percentage of GDP has been stable since the 1940s for goods and services. Even if you include entitlement programs we spend less today than we did even 3 years ago. The problem was expansion of transfer funds not included in typical percent GDP numbers since their impact is accounted for in other metrics. Additionally according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics there are 608,000 fewer government workers today than in 2009. You are a shill for Fox news. No one seems to know what is the ‘right size for government.’ Smaller sounds better but do we really want E coli in our food, planes falling from the sky, more expensive education and less regulation of corporate entities? It was the slave states that wanted to count slaves as a whole person so they could have more representatives in the House, which would have expanded their power even though slaves, obviously, had no voice. The Northern states sought to limit the power of the Southern states by not having them count slaves as a whole person. Ideally, they would have preferred to not have them counted at all, but the 3/5 was a compromise.

It’s the richest country in the world. It has the worlds largest economy. Yet why can’t it manage more than 24th out of 25 in the OECD education rankings? Why does medical care (put aside the distraction of private vs public healthcare) cost 4 times as much per capita as the next most expensive country when the standard/quality of care is 1/8th the level? Yet the debates in the US aren’t about how do we improve healthcare or education. They’re about labels and catchphrases and winning the next election cycle and having election cycles as the underlying driver of government. People yell about “states rights” when the purpose and reason for states even existing has long passed.
Americans aren’t even able to re-arrange the deck chairs on the Titanic because they’re too busy arguing about the fvcking colour of the chairs and whether the White Star Line providing chairs is socialism or not. Mores the pity, they’re too fvcking dumb to realize that that’s what they’re doing.
