THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, have you heard about Makayla Comstock? She is a 7-year-old girl suffering from leukemia and she is one of Oregon’s youngest medical marijuana patients. Her mother says she gives her daughter marijuana pills to combat the effects of chemotherapy, but her father, who lives in North Dakota, worries about the effects of the drug on her brain development. Mykayla Comstock was diagnosed with leukemia last spring. Her mother treats her with a gram of cannabis oil daily and as a weed smoker myself, I truly am torn with this decision. I do like the fact its helping the girl eat and feel better, but I don’t know how I feel about a 7 year old being stoned. Wanted to see what you and TheDirty Army think about it.

No, she was getting high. This whole thing started because her father could tell she was high out of her mind. She’s also been quoted saying it “makes her feel funny”. Marijuana use by a young child can trigger genetic disorders, including psychosis. So, she’s risking her daughter’s future while trying to help her. Everything comes with side effects, but too often marijuana users ignore those. Feeling good is only temporary, then they have to smoke it again and again. Pretty soon you’ve got a pothead loser. the pill she is probably taking (i dont follow this tabloid type crap) is Marinol, which was approved by the fda in 1986 and is perfectly legal by prescription IN ALL 50 STATES. and she is probably taking it for its anti-seizure effects and to combat nausea and vomitting associated with the chemo.

Marijuana for personal use was just legalized here in Washington State (and Colorado). 20 years too late for my mother, and my older sister, “The Truly Evil One”, threatened to have me arrested if I gave mom MJ, even though it would have lessened her nausea and pain, and given her an appetite. People who have done no research and jump to ‘druggie’ conclusions make me sick. I have fibromyalgia and am in pain most of the time, but, MJ isn’t an option for me, unfortunately. It makes me very sick. But for those it does help, more power to them.

I’ve had to watch many close relatives of mine lose the battle with cancer and let me tell you, chemo is one of the most God awful experiences. It’s seriously hell to watch someone go through and I can only imagine how terrible it would be to live through first hand. She needs pain medication! Would you rather she take something that ravages her liver? All medications have side effects, but marijuana is much safer. Think about it.

I’d like to think that most people understand- marjuana will not cure anything, or save anyone. It’s something people use to cope with the symptoms of chemotherapy. Chemo is nasty, nasty stuff, and I don’t blame anyone for exploring every avenue in coping with the side effects of chemotherapy. If your child was in terrible pain from something that had to be done (to fight their illness), would you completely eliminate this as an option?

Do some research, marijuana DOES in fact contain Cancer fighting agents in THC and reduces pain and nausea in Cancer patients…not sayin its THE CURE but it does help..as for this little girl I would do the same thing…Marijuana oils, tintures, butters (food and body) have been around for centuries and have helped in many cases…it really PISSES me OFF when people start making it all about getting STONED and HIPPIE like…People do use it for its medical purposes…I’d rather give my child something that I know is natural and has been through a sterile process than have her have an adverse reaction or DOPED up on pills…srry for the rant…

If its not pot it’s narco patches….many of these kids end up dependent on pain management drugs. That’s what they don’t tell you as a parent, or the public in general. The average treatment time for children with cancer is 2-3 years — a long time compared to *most* adult chemotherapy plans…

The dosages of the pills are based on weight and the aim is not to be stoned, not to be numb…but to just take enough to have an anti-emetic effect so the patient can keep down solid foods. Her doctors prescribed it and are monitoring it. To the poster who pointed out that the chemotherapy drugs are far more dangerous – you are spot on.
Drugs can be used for multiple things but it’s the people that abuse them that make it wrong. It’s not like the kid is doing it to get high it’s to make her feel better. I don’t smoke at all and I think it’s awesome. Wouldn’t you rather give her something that grows naturally rather then chemically made drugs that could cause even more harm? Something to calm her like Ativan etc…?
Does the positives of the treatment outweigh the negative? If so, then that is what she should be taking. Look at the side effects of chemotherapy, now that is some rough stuff. Giving the kid opiates for the pain she is experiencing would be a lot worse for her than cannabis oil… I would also assume keeping up her appetite is important- studies show that hungry kids don’t learn very well so I would assume that the mind of a kid with a full belly is probably more stimulated than that of a hungry, sick one? (Never smoked so we can’t call this a biased opinion.)

She is taking it in medical form. She is not getting “stoned.” The medical pill marijuana takes away the “high” and only treats the pain. Not to mention, her only other option are pain pills. So let’s see here, medical marijuana for a 7 year old suffering more than you will ever know, or lortab, vicodin, etcetera. It has a social stigma, but it is clearly for medical use. She is not smoking or using it unhealthily. No one has any right to judge this family, they have enough to deal with.
You can get those pills in a form in which the ingredient that makes you high is removed and you only receive the other benefits. This is a way better alternative than the doctors giving her pain killers which are highly addictive and do a number on your liver.

The reality is she will either live or die.
If she doesn’t make it at least there was some relief while she lived so that she could appreciate her life and the people around her with better capacity and with less pain and side effects.
If she lives and beats the cancer than dealing with whatever the ramifications might be from medical marijuana will be nothing compared to what they give patients as an alternative and probably nothing in terms of the blessing of having her alive and healthy.

actually, there is a high success rate for remission in pediatric cancers. most children are able to beat the most common types of leukemia. I’m not giving my opinion on medicinal marijuana, and I agree that chemo is a horrible thing to watch a child go through. I just wanted to clear up some misconceptions about pediatric oncology. many kids do well with chemo, radiation, and surgery in addition to family love and support. but it’s very important that parents stay well informed and do their research so that they can advocate for their child. these folks don’t strike me as the proactive type, and are obviously trying to dull the grief. a child needs parents to be their strength, not to retreat into a fantasy land.
I am as anti-marijuana as it gets. Really. But a bit of weed is nothing compared to the chemicals that this poor girl is getting pumped into her body for medical reasons. That, and there is a lot of research showing the very positive effects that weed has on cancer patients (and a plethora of other patients). I myself have gone through radiotherapy treatments for a disease I have at 23 and 25 years old and I was incredibly sick. I couldn’t imagine being 7 and having nothing to help me. If the marijuana pills are helping her, then let that be their decision.

I think most of you are ill informed, there are multiple studies including a YouTube video of cannabis extracts (cbd, cbn) that actually kill the cancer cells. So yes marijuana does actually kill cancer. It’s not just for people to cope…. Marinol is legal but highly addictive and deadly form of thc I belive, that gets you high… And doesn’t cure cancer that’s just for people to cope. Ok I have a five year old that has gone through two years of chemo therapy bc she got cancer twice yes twice. Marijuana is at least a herb and natural. All the things they give for nausea are chemically engineered. Chemo is disgusting especially for a child bc children’s cancer is way more aggressive and the children’s bodies can handle it better and metabolize it differently so they do five children higher doses. My child would have to be admitted for a week at a time to get chemo bc it was so hard on her body and she would not eat anything for that week usually. I am telling you you do not know what you would do to make your child feel better or to get nutrients In Their body. Do not judge if you havent seen a child suffer the way these kids do my child lost all hair lost ten lbs which is alo on their bodies. Mari Jane is NATURAL medicine. I am married to a Doctor and he knows that too!!! My brother in law passed away from cancer at 21 and I made pot brownies for him while he was in the hospital. He said it helped tremendously with pain and nausea from the TERRIBLE POISON CHEMO!!! Sadley he passed away on 420 and I take great happiness in knowing I could help with this wonderful drug to make his journey to the other side a little more at ease. As a childhood cancer survivor myself I was diagnosed at 14 and on the same shit. Chemo is way more deadly it literally kills your body. When your puking so much and cant keep anything down.and in so much pain. They can just give her the pill form and it doesn’t have thc but gives you an appetite and less nausea plus some helps with pain.

Wow what a bunch of sick people get a life and leave this family alone. I have a child with cancer she is six. we’ve been through radiation six weeks worth five days a week. Nine cycles of chemo six week cycles thats just treatment for the cancer. Hers was in The brain had to learn how to walk again talk again she is now left handed used to be right but the ataxia in her right side is to bad. I also use cannab for my child
