Adderall Is Not What You Think

THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, Adderall has completely ruined my sisters life. 3 years ago when my sister was 18 she was overweight and one of her friends told her she should start taking adderall because it would help her drop the weight. She went to go see a doctor and without having any ADD told him that she had a hard time focusing. So without running any test of any kind the doctor prescribed her 30mg Adderall to take, about 6 months later she had dropped over 35 pounds. No one in my family knew she was taking the drug. A few months back, I came home and my sister was not herself, she was acting different and very delusional. She went to work 3 days in a row, only to get there and walk right out claiming that she felt like everyone was looking at her. We took her to the hospital and they ran a drug test on her and she came up positive for methamphetamine’s and it made no sense since she didn’t do drugs. That is when the doctor told us my sister had a prescription for Adderall and that is why she was positive on the test. It was hell after that, they put my sister in a mental ward since she had fried her brain from taking the pills without needing them. She was not herself any longer and after two weeks in there, we had to get her out… all they were doing is feeding her other drugs. So we did a rehab thing at home, my sister couldn’t sleep, so my mother and I would take 12 hour shifts of watching my sister, to make sure she didn’t hurt herself or do anything bad. It was basically like raising a child all over again, she couldn’t do anything for herself and we had to baby her along. It took 3 months, but we got her back to normal and she told us how she had been taking the Adderall for weight loss and how she became addicted to them. We got a lawyer because we could not understand how a doctor can just give her the Adderall just to find out there is nothing we could do. I don’t get how all these doctors are out there prescribing drugs to people that don’t even need them. We all know the more they prescribe the more money they make, but they don’t see what the repercussions of doing that are. Something needs to be done about this so other families aren’t torn like mine was.
I wish the DEA would actually focus on shady doctors who prescribe meth. I’m glad your sister made it through the storm, most of them don’t.- nik

That stuff is really dangerous. I have ADD but when I take it my blood pressure spikes to a very unhealthy level and I feel weird for days.
^anonymous
if you’re feeling that way you’re probably taking too much…sounds like the OPs sister had way more issues than just those “side effects” warranted by addy
reddit! lol
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Adderall isn’t METH amphetamine, it’s simply amphetamine.
But it’s much more exciting and inciting when Nik calls it meth. But Nik’s not that smart so…
It’s a methamphetamine salt. Basically a derivative of meth.
No, it’s an Amphetamine Salt. Methamphetamine, the drug cooked up has all kinds of stuff in it, like draino, and numerous other terribly unhealthy fillers. Adderall is a synthetic stimulant amphetamine that isn’t quite as bad for you as Methamphetamine, unfortunately they’re not that different.
its amphetamine salts. its very similar to methamphetamine. you can actually get a prescription for methamphetamine as well. we sell it in my pharmacy. its also used for adhd. and obesity.
Really? Wow, I never knew you could get a prescription for methamphetamine. That’s very interesting Shay. Are you sure it’s the same as the illegal drug? Like it’s cooked up with all of the same disgusting chemicals? Makes your teeth fall out and everything.. You should look at the label and the actual name, I would be amazed if it was the same. That’s wild stuff.
It’s basiclly the same thing…
Thank u for the correction. Was about.to do so myself. People who don’t have adhd, or add will react differently to it than people with adhd. Dr. Should have tested. I still get tested for adhd even being diagnosed as a child. I guess my doctor cares about not losing his practice. With that being said: like pain kollers this os most abused prescription today. Hate to say it but your sister probably abusing other things. If the.hospital tests found Meth, she probably abusing Meth too. Not wanting to admit it to family. It’s an epidemic in AZ,I know, i used it in high achool when I was coming up in AZ.
I have ADHD I’m also a former addict. Amphetamine Salts saved my life. When I started using adderall my life changed for the better. Many people become addicted to cocaine ect. Out of the urge to self medicaate. Now that II’m a proper dose of meds im much better.
It’s your sisters fault for turning to drugs to lose weight instead putting in work. Don’t blame the doctors. I say she deserved what she got. This post makes me sick. If she wasn’t brain dead before she started popping pills to self medicate her fat ass she would have done research!
Yes she was wrong for wanting to take the easy way out but at the end of the day doctors just hand out meds like candy! they are so lazy now days they don’t even spend time looking into the patients issues “oh you can’t focus okay here is some aderall”. medications should be a last resort after trying other natural methods, that is why everyone is hooked on prescription pills. half my friend are all addicted to perc’s or oxys. they are like oh i have a headache i need a perc, like wtf how does that even make sense. I only take advil/tylenol if I have an unbearable headache there are so many natural alternatives!!!
Its called self responsibility
Look, many of these patients go in to these Dr. Offices saying “Doc I took my friends Adderall and it worked wonders for me and really helped me concentrate.” When a Dr. hears that he isn’t going to do much “counseling.” The MD won’t spend the time to exhaust all other natural alternatives because they know what the patient wants and what the end result is going to be anyway. Not to mention they get a patient that has to come in once a month and fork over a co-pay. Although this may be immoral and disgusting, it’s the way the way many Dr’s operate. It is on the patient to have some responsibility and do some research as to what the healthiest, most practical answer is to their problems. This is the same problem many Physician/ patients have with Oxycontin, which is essentially synthetic heroin. Big Pharma basically took every major illegal drug, synthesized it and figured out a way to pump it to the population while making trillions in the process. And how funny is it that marijuana, a flower that has never killed a soul, is classified as one of the most dangerous illegal drugs HAHA. I know here in Florida prescription medication accounts for a major portion of auto accidents and is responsible for more overdoses than almost all illegal drugs. The answer is education and self preservation. Do some research people. Also, there ARE in fact moral, considerate physicians that are out to help people and not interested in the kick backs a lot of them receive from the pharmaceutical companies. Although I feel bad for the poster’s sister, she looked for the quick and easy fix and should have done more research before putting her health in a compromising situation. Bless up.
Allow me to revise your comment to the appropriate length:
“Yes she was wrong for wanting to take the easy way out.”
“doctors just hand out meds like candy!”
well, don’t take candy from strangers if you don’t know what it fucking is. BAM! Problem solved. People need to be honest with their doctors so they can get the treatment they need! People who manipulate the system and don’t think ahead are only setting themselves up for failure.
Adderall, as a member of the amphetamine class of drugs, has LIMITED potential in the realm of weight loss. In addition to helping control behaviors related to ADHD & ADD, all amphetamine-like drugs work as anorexigenic agents – they make you less hungry. However, Adderall should NOT used for this purpose. There are other prescription drugs similar to Adderall that are legitimately used for weight loss, like phentermine (Adipex). They have less potential for abuse and have a greater anorexigenic effect than Adderall. It’s probably worth mentioning that for these drugs, (1) people often stop losing weight after a couple weeks (these are designed to more-or-less kick-start your weight loss, they have no impact on your metabolism that’s needed to sustain the weight loss), (2) many people experience a rebound gain in weight (they gain back the weight they lost with the help of the drug), and (3) you could expect to lose on average 5-10% and at best 15% of your body weight.
If you abuse Adderall (having to lie to a doctor in order to get it, or taking more than you need for your ADD/ADHD), you put yourself at risk to side effects ranging from emotional disturbances, hallucinations/delusions, psychotic breaks, or even life-threatening serotonin syndrome (especially if Adderall is combined with certain other prescription drugs – or recreational drugs).
With abuse of Adderall (taking it when you’re not supposed to, or taking more than you’re supposed to), it’s not uncommon for people to have side effects ranging from emotional changes, hallucination/delusion, psychotic breaks, or even life-threatening serotonin syndrome (especially if Adderall is taken with certain other prescription drugs such as Zoloft or recreational drugs such as ecstacy).
Bottom line: Don’t lie to a doctor in order to get this stuff…please…
Adderall has the same effects as cocaine if that tells you anything… Not good
But nik if I recall right, you have told several women that they needed to go to the doctor & claim they had ADD so they can drop the weight… Correct me if I am wrong, but you have said this several times in the past so that makes you in reality no better than the doctors for encouraging women to do this? Just saying…
He also has advertised for Adderall on his site….get your story straight Nik….
He allowed advertising space for some legal form of adderall. It wasn’t exactly Adderall, but yes, it doesn’t take a genius to know Nik is a sketch ball. I mean, look at his line of work. He makes money off of jealous people talking sh** about others because something didn’t go their way. Granted, some of the people on this site deserve to be outed, but lets face it the majority are the product of a hater.
I agree im pretty sure he has so how can he make a statement like that hmm nik is one sketchy guy
He has many times, positive of it he has said ” to lose those last ten lbs” and to go see a dr and get on adderall I mean I’ve been coming to this site daily for years and LOVE it but its kind of hypocritical
I don’t know how it is in the states but here in Canada they are starting to crack down on doctors like this that hand out prescriptions to anyone and they are making it extremely difficult for people to gain access to addictive prescription drugs like oxy’s and adderall. I work in a dental clinic and were no longer allowed to prescribe anything stronger than Tylenol 3. I don’t know why they give kids drugs for ADD when it’s been scientifically proven that a change in diet works.
I’m sorry to hear about your sister and I’m glad you all took care of her and she’s ok now. You can’t blame all of this on the Doctor. She lied to get the drugs and willingly took them even though she knew she didn’t need them. If you don’t make her take responsibility for this, she will be using again in no time.
You know what else works for weight loss? Discipline and a gym routine. Adderall isn’t the problem, it’s just another symptom of the real issue: lazy American youth with too much time, money and technology. What a sad generation.
The same thing happened to someone I knew. I met her after her ordeal, but she said Adderall made her go nuts just like this girl. Unless absolutely necessary, avoid drugs at all costs, especially anti-depressants.
I’d love to see a study that says a change in diet affects your add. I’ve had it since I was born, medicated at 7, and my marks skyrocketed before I even knew what I had or was taking. Now I’m back on it as an adult, I work out 5 days a week, and eat Well, I still need it to function. I take dexadrin so the effects aren’t as bad, I have some sleepless nights though.
There is a specific diet that you have to follow its not just “eating well” and it’s been proven to work
Pffffft show me this magical diet. Are you a psychologist? Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet. Diet may help some but this is a brain disorder. The brain is too complicated for most to understand.
I agree with you. Some people have REAL ADHD and need these drugs. Your sister abused them, but its still wrong what the doctor did. The prescriptions should not be that easy to get! In Canada you need to have a psychologist test to get the diagnosis. It should always be this way.
That is really sad, and unfortunately ADD/ADHD is a pretty easy condition to fake in order to gain a prescription. I totally agree that physicians diagnosing this condition need to be more cautious and thorough about sorting out the drug seekers from legitimate cases. I am pretty severely ADD, have never touched any sort of street drug in my life and 30mg of adderall doesn’t even touch me, I just feel normal and can actually focus enough to accomplish normal daily tasks. So, there are those of us that actually do need it and do not experience side effects. As I understand it, if you feel jittery, can’t sleep, or high at all then you do not need this medication or your dosage is wrong. And yes while it is true that you tend to lose your appetite on adderall, and yes it’s stimulant so you will probably lose weight, but I don’t think losing a few lbs. is worth risking your mental and physical health over.
Its all about Vyvanse!
It’s this reason that at times people with true ADD/ADHD ect or other issues, that they could have a hard time getting the medications they need. Stop blaming the doctors and start educating people and the make the individual accountable. Of course doctors need to be careful, but it sounds to me that these people are looking to play the blame game. My daughter has ADD she is in her teens. We tried everything before turning to medications. She was not able to focus on anything…. her grades were terrible she was overwhelmed by simple everyday routines. She’s a super bright girl but has a true attention issue. Adderal has helped her a great deal. From what we’ve been told and what I have witnessed myself is you shouldn’t physically become dependent if you are taking the correct dosage. My daughter can take several days off the meds without side effects, that would tell me that if you are taking the meds as described your not going to have those terrible side effects. There is a difference between use and misuse.
Well said!
Did you try sending her to boarding school? Problem solved. You didn’t? Weak parents weak children.
You’re an idiot.
Totally true.
A teenager has trouble paying attention??!!! OMG that can’t be true! LOL Of course she has a hard time paying attention, school is boring as sh**. I didn’t pay attention in high school either and was prescribed Adderall. I stopped filling the prescription in college and actually started applying myself and got far better grades at my University than I ever did on medication. I am not going to tell you how to raise your children, it is your choice. But I can say that I would NEVER put my children on Amphetamines. Adderall is no different than the Black Beauties that Johnny Cash and many other celebrities got strung out on. That’s good that she takes them as prescribed though. Perhaps your situation is not one similar to mine, but I can directly relate my need for medication in high school to being LAZY! I was more concerned with sports and making weight for wrestling than I was with homework. Sometimes a little discipline can be a life saver. Best of luck.
My original post has many typos… oops.
I should have been more specific, she just turned 13 and loves school. We noticed the attention issue for a few years before we finally tried medication. So this isn’t just a high school thing. She’s in the 8th grade, but I see your point on that. I unfortunately was the same way. I was happy to prove to myself that I can actually get A’s in college
A lawyer!!??? What kind of horse crap is that? Your vain/shallow sister lied to a doctor to get a drug she wanted. A drug she willfully ingested and probably praised when she got weight loss results. How is this the doctors fault? When will Americans learn to own their choices and accept their mistakes????
I tried adderall for weight loss a few years ago. It worked great, but made me act crazy.
This is her fault. Period. She lied about her symptoms. She acquired a controlled substance under false pretenses and used it inapppropriately. There are no blood tests for ADD. It is a purely symptom based diagnosis. Further evaluation can be obtained either through a psychiatrist or neuropsych testing but for garden variety ADD most primary care physicians will prescribe a stimulant as first line. It is therefore relatively easy to lie and obtain this drug. She decided to play roulette with a serious medication and now the family is suing the doctor? The consequences are awful, but blame her.
There is NO evidence that changing your diet changes symptoms of ADD.
Have you actually done any research or spoken to a naturopathic doctor? Probably not..
Your sister is lucky she has such a great family, you should be proud of yourselves.
Nik just wondering if you maybe see a link between amphetamine abuse in teenage girls and website’s like yours. Unless you are genetically blessed, the body types you promote as ‘worthy’ through this site are often unattainable by the majority of young women unless they starve themselves. You can point the finger at shady doctors but you should also point one at yourself.
I’m a doctor. There’s no blood test for ADD. It’s a clinical diagnosis. So all anyone can go off is what the patient tells them. Personally, I refer all the ppl asking for it to psych. Bc there’s no way to know if they’re bs’ing. Def not doctors at fault here. Time for ppl to take esponsibility for their own health and the drugs they willingly put in their body.
Good on you, I had to go to two doctors(psychiatrist ) to get my meds and diagnose me
The doctors you know are horrible or you are a horrible doctor yourself.
I was giving a clinical analysis and a blood test to see if I had it.
what an IDIOT. I knew this years ago. Your sister is fat AND lazy to boot! She needs to take responsibility.
i used addy during finals seasons a few times, and am not using it, do not plan on using it, and encountered minimal sides. your sister is a weak drug addict. dont blame the drug.
This post is complete BS and a big troll. Sounds just like it came from the script of Requiem for a Dream, nice one. If it’s real though (which I doubt), your sister is an idiot, who yes, should be in a mental hospital. I have ADHD and have been prescribed this drug. You don’t do it in high doses or for weight loss, that is retarded. It’s for people with severe ADHD.
I was prescribed adderral in college and totally helped me focus, do homework, study better etc…I can relate to the post because i too had severe side effects from it when i quit taking it and landed me in a mental hospital as well. 604 your an idiot to call her sister an idiot and that she should be in a mental hospital. Everyone reacts to medication differently. 604 how old are you and what are you really taking it for? Because you may wind up in our same boat one day.
I took it because I have legitimate, severe ADHD unlike half of the college losers that take it because they think it will help them on their SATs or macroeconomics midterm. Or for weight loss, like apparently this retarded sister did. Did you take it for weight loss to, you fat pig?
Hired an attorney?? People like your and your family make me sick. Frivolous lawsuit initiators, driving up the cost of healthcare. Also, your dumb cunt of a sister is making it difficult for people who really need adderall to get it. She LIED to the doc, she asked for it. Or better yet, blame your MOM for being a shitty parent. Hire a parenting coach instead of a lawyer, your $ would be better spent. Dumb@ss.
what about that shit nik pushes for focus. its like that>>>>>>…
Your sister graduated to meth if that’s what she came up positive for. Adderral shows up as amphetamines NOT methamphetamine. Sorry to burst your bubble, but your sister was a tweaker.
I, personally, was Rx’d adderall for ADHD when I was a young teen. My teachers were the ones who first noticed I might have an attention prob. A psychiatrist had me take a bunch of testsAND had my parents and teachers fill out multiple questionaires. After about 2-3 months of screening, my doc decided to start me on it. With behavioral therapy and medication I was able to learn ways to live with my disability. For me, adderall made me seem “normal” like every other kid in class. If you get “cracked” out while taking it you do NOT need it and it will make you seem crazy! After 6 yrs of being on it I was ready to live without it. It was NOT easy to get prescribed this drug as a child, although the majority of all ADHD cases are diagnosed during childhood. I got thru college without it! in my opinion adults should have a much harder time getting rx’d this drug.
LOL. Adderall isn’t meth, it’s amphetamine in a formula to make you digest it slower so it will last longer with less of a “high”.
And Amphetamines are one of the safest drugs around, safer than caffeine with fewer side effects. The US Military gives amphetamines to pilots on long missions so they can maintain their focus.
My doctor prescribed regular amphetamines for my ADHD, and they’ve been mostly beneficial. I used to use energy drinks and lots of caffeine, which was awful, amphetamines are far smoother without any spikes or crashes, and I’ve never felt like I needed to increase my dose or abuse them over 4 years I”ve been using them.
That’s not to say some people may react differently, and like all drugs there is definitely a psychological effect that could be called addiction, like a morning coffee drinker I sometimes feel I want one to “start my day”. But it’s not a physical need, I can skip them if I want without any problem, and when my prescription runs out I never feel a strong need to get it refilled. Obv. some people can’t deal with drugs in any form, but most people can change their behavior when their use of a drug or alcohol becomes bad for their lives.
I feel bad for this persons sister, but the sister was taking Meth, not adderall, and sounds like she was dealing with other mental issues that may have made it difficult for her to deal with addiction.
Perfectly said^. As a responsible, long-term Adderall user, I kind of take it personally when people blame it for their problems. Like you said, people may react differently, but Adderall was a godsend for me.
This is ‘murica and that’s how capitalism works. Pharmaceutical companies pay doctors big bonuses for prescribing the pills. Since Medicare has screwed our healthcare system over, it’s nearly impossible for healthcare facilities to make money without being drug pushers. So there you have it.
By the way, I see too many people beg for Adderall or fake symptoms to get prescribed Adderall. Sounds like your sister just knew how to play the system and now is paying the price. Can’t feel sorry for her.
its not the doctors fault…its thats girls sisters….when a patient tells something to a doctor, that doctor has to take what the patient said as 100% truth, that’s why its so easy to get prescribed drugs from a doctor. Theres no concrete tests they can do to tell how much pain you are in, how much anxiety you are facing, or if you are having trouble concentrating,, so what a patient says goes more or less, dont get me wrong they have some so called tests for some of these ailments but they are not a true black/white results like a blood test for a virus would be or such.
I myself have ADHD and was diagnosed at a young age, around 11 or so. I am now 27 and nothing bothers me more than people saying “I think I have add/adhd too because I can’t focus in class or I don’t have the motivation to write this paper, or complete this project at work, blah blah”. Well guess what? That’s NOT add or adhd, no one enjoys writing a paper or going to class or doing some daily mundane task at their job, so of course you’re not going to focus. It has a lot more to do with just being able to concentrate on something that you are not interested in. People with ADHD can’t focus even if they try to, it’s like it goes in one ear and out the other even though you are wanting to pay attention. You also do not think before you speak, and will say whats on your mind without filtering it. I have a prescription to adderall but I do not take it because I do not like the way it makes me feel. But all these people claiming they have ADD or ADHD because they can’t focus on something that they do not have any interest in is just ignorant.
Exactly, it bugs the hell out of me when people say they use it “for weight loss” (which I doubt, if a doctor prescribes this for weight loss that is one dumb doctor) or in college just because they all of the sudden “can’t focus”. And then they use it for midterms.
I was prescribed adderall all the way back when I was in middle school at 12 years old and told I had huge ADHD. I speak my thoughts to anyone without filtering it and have a very short attention span.
I remember hearing of 1 kid growing up who had ADHD, these days it seems like every other kid is being diagnosed with it and I agree with what the above poster said about people who believe they have it just because they are reluctant to focus when given a mundane task. Parents are also lazier and instead of trying to teach their children focus and proper behavior they go straight to medicating them. It also doesn’t help that parents are feeding their kids shit full of sugars, preservatives and chemicals making them more hyper. I have a friend whose son was diagnosed with ADHD and she had him on Ritalin and it just turned him into a zombie. She switched him over to an organic diet with vitamin and mineral supplements and he’s completely fine now.
IT ‘sTRUE!!! I had the same thing happen to me around 3 years ago. DR. perscribed me adderal when I was a sophmore in highschool and after 2 years of being on it I was stuck in a reality that wasn’t real and had lost my mind completely. I was able to get out of it after 2 months on antipsychotics.. I will never again in my life touch this stuff. ruined so much for me and my life.
Why would you get a lawyer involved? I’m almost 99.9% sure the doctor ran appropriate tests. The tests that they run are NOT psychological, they are simply tests of questioning and reason. ANYONE can EASILY lie to obtain ADHD medication. So instead of wasting $1000′s on a lawyer to only have his license stripped, why dont you slap your dumb f*** sister for becoming a drug-addict. Seriously, it is not the doctors fault, it’s uneducated fat teenagers who are too lazy to go to the gym.
I am a previous addict/party girl & Adderall fucked up my life more than drugs or alcohol ever did. I lost friends, family, my career, my car everything I had worked for in my life I lost with in a matter of months. The worst thing I lost was my sanity and I was not on any drug but Adderall!. After about a yr I physically could not handle & luckily had a friend who helped me quit. I was in bed for two weeks sleeping literally all day and night, I had no energy and it took me months to get my energy back and two years to get my life back. ADDERALL FOR WEIGHT LOSS IS NOT WORTH IT. Anyway It was very touching to here you were able to help your sister and be there for her. Glad to se she is better & keep sharing your story you can help many others!!
Adderall is terrific when used properly. People remain on it for years at a consistent dose. No side effects, no withdrawals. I have been a responsible user for about a year now, it’s helped me immensely. And to the idiots above, it’s a combination of amphetamine salts, WORLDS away from ‘meth’. A cup of coffee in the morning has far more of a stimulation and dependence-building effect than Adderall does.
I take a 10mg and actually “try” to break it into 4 pieces. At the most I take half – or – 5mg. You don’t need that much. 30mg? That seems like a lot!
Who cares? She went to a doctor, lied about why she needed it, and now youre gonna cry about how adderrall messes with your life?
Sounds like she did it to herself.
Seriously, there is such thing as EXERCISE! I know the American population has a problem with this verb, but no tears shed for someone ruining their own life.
Adderall is not terrific. With prolonged usage, such as over the course of ten years, and even taking it responsibly, it still has terrible effects such as depression. I know from personal experience. It is far worse when someone starts doing it for reasons outside of what they were prescribed….and that should be common sense.
Many of you who say Adderall is amazing have not taken it long enough for the seriously negative effects to set in.
Your sister is responsible for her actions and lying to get Adderral to loose weight is irresponsible. Doctors ca see financial incentive to prescribe certain drugs but I’m guessing your sister knew what medication she wanted and what she would say during the interview in order to get it. A non stimulant medication should have been the first choice for obvious reasons. She was there to seek treatment for her weight, but also her mental health. A teenager Lying to seeking drugs for weigh loss is important because she needed some therapy and treatment. She’s not at fault when lookd at as a misdiagnosed patient.
