If you look at his eyes, you can tell he was obviously very mentally disturbed. I wouldn’t doubt that schizophrenia was setting in. Just today on NBC News they said his mom had reached out to a family member and said that he was getting worse, that she felt like she was losing him. She knew and had guns/ammo where he could access them and also did nothing to help her son, that’s why this happened. I am in no way taking up for what he did, that is just what I see from my perspective. God NOR gun control could have prevented this. Psychotherapy and medication early on would have made all the difference.
Not only did she have guns and ammo, she taught him how to shoot….after she already knew he was nuts. I completely blame this bitch. Who teaches their mentally ill child to use weapons?! I worked with individuals with developmental disabilities and was actually attack by a man who was in his 30′s but had the mind capacity of maybe 6 or 7 years of age. I couldn’t take it personally because with ASpbergers, something can happen in July and not rest but if there is a trigger in August, that is when they react. And sometime that tigger can make him react more than once.it was also said that Mom taught him how to use the weapons, would one handgun not been enough if she really thought she needed one? He played violent games all the time and there is a Batman game for the title of the movie listed above. It could very well be that is where the idea came from…did he own that game? His mother also took him out of that school prior and homeschooled him. How much torment, bullying or other things did he experience at that school?
By NO means am I defending this guy for what he did but if you remember correctly, this movie also brought out a shooting in the theatre when it first came out. They also said that he was very intelligent…there is a very fine line between special/genius and idiot and unintelligent in other aspects of his life. I don’t like to place blame on someone unless it is cut and dried or obvious as to why something like this would happen, but we may never know. Personally, I think this movie and the game should be investigated…could it have possibly gotten to the point where he could not make a distinction between reality and fantasy ? I don’t think I will ever understand why his mother had these rifles in this situation. So very sad!!!
This mother made the ultimate mistake by introducing her mentally ill son to guns. I feel that she did this in order to possibly bond with him, since it’s been reported that she took him on mulitple occasions to the firing range. I have friends who have family members suffering from severe mental illness and the hell they go through trying to get them the proper medical treatment is extremely difficult to do, even with good medical insurance. But this mother was extremely irresponsible, she knew her son had an obsession with guns and she should have removed all of her guns from the home once his mental state started to deteriorate. Studies show that those who own guns are far more likely to to die from their own weapon being used against them. There’s no need for people to even own such high powered guns in the first place. Sadly, my friend is close to the mother of one of those poor victims. Her son, along with the other victims, should have never died that day. It’s my hope that out of this tragedy that mental health services will become more affordable and more readily availible to those who need it, but I also hope that new laws are put in place to make it illegal for citizens to possess guns in the home where another family member is known to be mentally unstable. May Daniel and the rest of the victims RIP….

One year clean now and heroin addicts are more worried about ther next fix and don’t want to get lock up BC they can’t get high. I think saving children is more important then any drug put there. That’s actually a great point. People are forgetting that funding for mental health care and research has been cut significantly. The only thing people are focusing on these days is breast cancer. People who used to get medication covered by insurance AND have caregivers who ensured medical compliance are no longer provided the services. Psych wards and drug rehabilitation programs are no longer able to keep patients for long periods of time thanks to Medicare regulations. So you end up with a whole bunch of people who don’t take medications and can’t stay in for mental evaluations and have no way of controlling their conditions.

once a child is an adult, they can choose at that point whether they want to use a gun, buy a gun or become a member at a range or shooting facility.
I believe this would allow the system to recognize who is mentally able and stable enough to be eligible to own a gun, In Canada, our strict gun laws allow you to own a gun but clearly draw the line between what is legal and what is not, unfortunately not every place in the world follows our guidelines, but i think all of this could have been prevented by some steps which seem to have been missed.
