FYI – Plumbers are in the south (excluding MS) are required to be a Plumbers helper for 7 YEARS before they are even eligible to go for the Journeyman’s license and then required to pass a very extensive test again to obtain a Master’s License which is focused on extensive math and safety guidelines. That test is one of the MOST failed tests in this country; not because the people who take it are ignorant, but because it is very difficult.

I’m going to college and I have tattoos and a daughter. Just because a female has tattoos doesn’t mean that she’s white trash or starves for attention or any of the things you people think. Some females choose this way to display their affection for good art. For instance, all my tattoos mean something. I have my daughters name and footprint, memorial tattoos for family members, etc. my brother is covered in tattoos. And for some people, they like the pain and the rush they get from the tattoo. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but when I see tattoos I don’t think that the individual wearing them has low self esteem or strives for attention, I look at the miraculous art work or the meaning behind the mark on their body. It is truly art for an individual to be able to permanently put their work on someone’s body, and it is truly tolerance for an individual to withstand it

I’m also a college student, I’m studying to get my bachelor’s degree in Biology. I have two tattoos, and I’m planning to get a third. Both of my tattoos are extremely meaningful to me, and I frankly don’t care what anyone else thinks about them. I agree with you that one can be a decent person while having tattoos, BUT visible tattoos are a no-no to me. I personally do not mind her tattoos, but I know some people are less understanding about that type of thing, it could prove very difficult for her to find a ‘real’ job (i hate that term, but I don’t know what else to call it). If that same exact tattoo was on her lower back she would still have her meaningful piece of art, while maintaining a ‘clean’ image in the workspace.

CandyCane, I’m not the poster with the kid. I’m simply defending her because I’ve had friends go through the same thing (having a kid, then going back to college). There is no game plan for life. You roll with the punches, and if you have a kid, you don’t suddenly become worthless “white trash”. There are things that are a million times worse, ie. drugs, stealing, cheating, violence. Some of my classiest friends have tattoos, some of my trashiest friends don’t. Using tattoos as a moral indicator is useless in this day and age. Everyone and their mother has a tattoo. P.S. It goes well beyond dating/marriage. If you have visible, large tattoos and aren’t already set for life financially, you will be discriminated against in a way that will negatively effect you for your entire life. End of story. It will be harder to do everything from get a loan to get a job and your children will pay for it as well.
If you really want to lead any sort of alternative lifestyle, tuck your shirt in and blend in. Then society will let you do whatever you want on your free time. Trust me, it has been working for a while now.
Harder to get a loan? Are you serious? Where in the world do you take out loans? In this country we have FEDERAL LENDING LAWS and loans are based on credit and income; period. I was a loan officer for 4 years (with tattoos, by the way) and I have had no problems with a job, or loans.
I have a “real” job as someone so nicely put it, I’m married, I have 2 children, the house, the dog, the picket fence, the whole kitten-kaboodle.
I think it’s very sad that people feel like they have the right to judge based on a tattoo but if I walked up and told you how disgusting you were because you were fat, I would be considered rude and thoughtless.

There are plenty of loans above and beyond the standard credit based loans that you used to give out. As a girl from Southern California I see these ink filled disasters like, everyday… I went to school with some of them. Most are delusional and think their tattoos will attract a bad boy type that only thier fierceness can tame and will give them a love story for the ages. But we all know how that ends. Why does anyone get tattoos? Sometimes, yes for themselves, but most of the time to portray the image of how they want to be perceived, and who they really want to be associated with. Birds of a feather flock together. And the discussion on art is debatable. If you like a tattoo artist’s work then commission him or her to paint you a beautiful piece of art to hang on your wall. Then when you inevitably get sick of it you can take it down and hang up a new piece. You know these girls will be sick of their body art at sometime. How often do girls buy new clothes, shoes, makeup, cars etc.? Very often. And not because they need to, but because they’re sick of their old shit. To think they’re not going to get sick of their tattoo is absurd. Has anyone gotten a tribal sun tattoo lately a’la early 90′s grunge? No. Why? Because it’s passé. Just like neck and chest tatts will be in 20 years. Plus, who wants a permenate turtle neck??? That would make me feel claustrophobic.
So, being a woman with lots of tattoos ( hand, arms, chest, legs ect) i have a great job and am going to school for a better one. I see no problem with how i choose to decorate myself. Clearly i am not going to be a dr or lawyer any time soon but that not what i want for my life. To date i have been a hair stylist over10 years and have made very good money. 0 kids and an very happy with my life. Some people just make me laugh. I am a young woman who has a full sleeve done (among two other hidden tattoos), +2′s, and a very well paying job. I put myself through college (a masters degree in web programing/ design) and I am engaged. So tell me again how someone like me can be called white trash? It’s all personal preference and what the individual likes. I put a TON of money into my body art and modifications- and it shows. If you go to a good artist and surgeon it shows.
