Another Reason To Hate Facebook

THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, been dirty army strong for the better part of 5 years and have never felt compelled to reach out to you until now. I lost my brother over the holidays and have been dealing with his loss ever since. Fast forward, I attempt to get his page removed off Facebook only to find out that they never will remove a deceased member, rather they created a, “Moratorium” page where they remain permanently affixed on Facebook for others to comment on. Frankly, I hate facebook and erased my profile as soon as I graduated college. What kind of company holds a family hostage like that who is dealing with the death of a loved one? Anyway, I knew TheDirty was the best forum to communicate this injustice as well as turn to you for any advice that would assist me in getting my brothers’ page removed. No one wants to be constantly reminded of the loss they endured because of a stupid social network website. Help out a dirty army soldier Nik.
Email me. That is some sick sh*t.- nik

There was an article in WSJ about a 16 y/o girl who died of surgical complications and Facebook won’t hand over the password to her parents due to privacy issues. I don’t understand the logic since she was a minor and is deceased. Any way OP so sorry for your loss, but this is not an issue you are alone in. This is an issue that is swiftly coming to light on the national stage.
Now THAT is fucked..
Technically you can’t delete any page, they can only be ‘deactivated’. Facebook feels as if it owns every single thing you post on there. It’s become the new big brother.
You can fully delete a Facebook profile. Google “delete Facebook profile” and follow the steps. It isn’t rocket science.
nah dummy, you can delete your account, i just deleted mine today after being deactivated for 2 years
This is awful!
You can delete it permanently, I’ve done it twice. You have to go to Help and how to permanently delete account, follow the instructions, and if you don’t log in in 14 days it will be PD. something weird though kinda confusing happened that made me think I couldn’t delete it but I just turned on my brain n figured it out.
So what is the big deal? If you are bothered by the page still being there, just stop visiting it. Why are you wasting your time and energy on this?
losing family during the holidays is so tough. keep yr chin up, op. fb ought to change that policy immediately!
There was a report saying you need to get a state issued death certificate among other forms to get their fb page removed…
We have a friend from highschool who was murdered by her exhusband in front of her daughters. Not only will her FB page not be deleted, she pops up as a person you may know. Don’t say there isn’t a way to delete those pages. Get creative and do it Zuckerberg!
Karma Nik
Nik, you are a hypocrite! There is a girl who died about two years ago and about a week before she died she was posted on the dirty . com in August 2011 I believe. When I messaged you on Facebook & emailed you… no action was taken. And It’s still on the dirty.com
Sorry for your loss.
I’m truly sorry to hear about your loss, my heart and prayers go out you and your family. Hope you can get this issue resolved.
i do completely agree that the family should be able to take off the FB page, and its sick that FB wont do it,but on the premise that its because the writer of this article doesnt want to be reminded or something?? well, unless they are going to burn all pictures at home so as not to upset anyone with the brother’s image, is there really anything that can be done. I mean, its kinda as simple as not looking/going on FB isnt it??
Facebook is the new Myspace. Ask the cholos in Phoenix. One was shot by his sister holding a gun to his head as they posed for FB.
Guess what, if you own a FB, these are your peeps.
Thumbs down
If you don’t have the password you supply the death cert. and all public notices. Than you can deactivate the account. My husband passed and it was easy to remove. Not sure why she having issues if have the proper docs. Sounds fishy.
Anyone who joins facebook agrees to their terms. It’s your fault if you have a change of heart regarding having an account.
My classmate was murdered by two other classmates when She was 14. This was 2009, her page is still active. Their accountedge dissappeared as soon as they were arrested.
you’re an idiot.
Did u not read the post????
Obviously my post earlier didn’t stick after the idiot who said you can’t permanently delete Facebook. I’ve permanently deleted no problem. And to Jessica you sound like your fucking fishy. Did you perhaps kill your husband because he was cheating on Facebook?
People think they use Facebook. But actually FB is using YOU. You’re nothing more than a product. They sell your info for millions/billions and don’t give a crap about you or your privacy.
AGREED.
BEST thing I’ve done was get rid of FB and I used to be a serial Facebooker. I can’t even imagine the hurt and anger that must be there when FB decides to Big Brother someone’s page and make it a public “memorial”, which YOU, the family, have no control over. One more example of Zuck and his nutbag lib sister’s attempts to make everything an open book and to make as much money as possible off of you, all in the name of “community”. IMO, you’re a dumb ass if you log into any other side through the “Log In with Facebook” button. “Privacy settings” mean don’t mean shit on Facebook.
Best of luck getting it down and I hope you find peace with your loss, OP.

Funny how the dirty won’t take anything down either though…. even if the allegations are false unless someone pays big bucks not to have their address and childrens names and schools on this disgusting site. Lmao talk about morals and yet you turn to the grimiest website around.
This is so true, one of my closest friends took heroes life in September, fb won’t delete her account and on a daily basis it comes up with her horoscope on our pages and still says things like can you beat her high score in a game etc. it’s very upsetting and a daily remainder about our loss

How do I submit a special request for a deceased user’s account on the site?
We will process certain special requests for verified immediate family members, including requests to remove a loved one’s account. This will completely remove the timeline and all associated content from Facebook, so no one can view it.
For all special requests, we require verification that you are an immediate family member or executor. Requests will not be processed if we are unable to verify your relationship to the deceased.
Examples of documentation that we will accept include:
The deceased’s birth certificate
The deceased’s death certificate
Proof of authority under local law that you are the lawful representative of the deceased or his/her estate.
