NBC News- Jurors told a judge they couldn’t decide on a verdict in the defamation case brought by a former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader and teacher against a gossip website.
The attorney for Sarah Jones, who admitted to having sex with her underage student, told jurors Thursday that they can send a message by finding that a gossip website defamed her in lewd online posts that were anonymously submitted.

COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) – A federal judge declared a mistrial in a defamation lawsuit against a gossip website filed by a former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader who had sex with her underage student.
U.S. District Judge William Bertelsman declared the mistrial Friday after jurors couldn’t reach a verdict.
Former cheerleader and high school teacher Sarah Jones had sued Scottsdale, Ariz.-based thedirty.com and its operator over two posts that said she had slept with every Bengals player and likely had two sexually transmitted diseases.
She was seeking $11 million,
The posts were unrelated to Jones’ relationship with her former 17-year-old student. Jones pleaded guilty in that case in October in a deal that allowed her to avoid jail time. The two are still dating.

Jurors were tasked with deciding whether Jones proved the posts about her having sex with all the Bengals players and likely having STDs were substantially false. But the closest they came to answering that question was an 8-2 vote in Jones’ favor; the verdict had to be unanimous.
Jurors did unanimously agree that thedirty.com’s operator, Nik Richie, did not act with malice when he posted the submissions. That means jurors would not have awarded Jones any money had they all been able to agree that the posts were substantially false.

I don’t think this website is the most noble cause I’ve ever seen,, and I say this from the perspective of someone who used to be professional cheerleader so I know what it’s like to be targeted as a “Z-listed” local “celebrity” – the best thing this woman could have done was ignore your posts, to be “above them” so to speak. As for her position as a high school teacher, I always questioned the judgment of other cheerleaders who chose to do that hobby given their line of work. In a perfect world, sure, you should be able to do whatever hobby you want and also go do some other job during the day, but common sense tells us that some professions and hobbies just don’t mix, the pitfalls aren’t worth it. However, if this woman ever weighed the risks and rewards of cheerleader/teacher at all, she certainly chose the side of “more attention, at whatever costs.” I think if you’re a kindergarten teacher or something you’re prob fine as a cheerleader, but in the internet age, teaching TEENAGERS and doing this is a no-no, assuming you value your image as a teacher more than you prefer the attention.
