So through the freedom of information act I’ve requested information on this item. Deitz did apologize after being sentenced which showed remorse (although how sincere no one really knows). He did 22 mos of an 80mos sentence which given my knowledge of the system is slightly more than the average. He had 157 successful passes from the institution for work releases and family contact, as well as had successfully completed 3 programs and 5 voluntary work related tickets. He had no institutional charges or incident reports and presented a strong release plan to the NPB at his hearing with having a job lined up as well. They obviously viewed him as a manageable risk and therefore granted him a conditional release. This is all available through the attorney general by simply requesting the information.
Powell on the other hand appears to have received a substantially shorter sentence for a similar charge. That appears to have been due to the lack of an o.c charge. He has a history of failure to follow conditions (I.e conditional sentences. Breaches while under conditions), he completed no programming and appears to have had some institutional problems, yet he served less of a percentage of his sentence than the first guy. Both gentleman seem to have substantial history’s with the police but the latter has several assaults (one conviction in jan.2010 for domestic assault/evading) which is no doubt related to his current gf. This prior conviction resulted in a 10month time served sentence while the crown requested 5years. This was due to the inmate spending a majority of his time in the hole for his own safety, and resulting in unfair living conditions. His file information indicates 3 separate occasions of protective custody (Rpcc, PACc, saskpen) and was subsequently placed on pc status at his own request due to personal safety concerns.
Anyone can view this information through the freedom of information act. I encourage you to do this.
