This morning/afternoon (I had a late night, up thinking) I woke up, eventually checked Thedirty, and on the front page, I saw the article about Oscar Grant. I found out this news last night from my brother in Santa Barbara. We both grew up in Oakland, before moving away for school (I’m your biggest Chico State fan, by the way, I doubt you’d ever come up here; but if you did, you know who to call) and were subject to many, many situations we would not have been, had we lived in a nicer area. But both my brother and I knew Oscar. He was my manager at KFC, and he was an amazing person. He wasn’t a thug, he wasn’t a criminal, he was a father doing whatever it took to support his daughter and stand by her. He had a dopey grin that was infectious, and he had a beautiful soul. My heart cringes knowing he will never be able to kiss his daughter before bed, to know that he will never flash that goofy smile, and he will never crack another joke.

**EMAIL UPDATE: The protesting has started and riots have begun. Police are trying to diffuse the situation, and this is not making national news? OVER 500 PEOPLE ARE PROTESTING AT THE POLICE STATION, AND Officer Johannes Mehserle supposedly did RESIGN today, VIA KTUV and should be facing charges of murder. He is trying to get out of Manslaughter charges.

CNN.com: Grant holds up his hands, appearing to plead with police. Burris said Tuesday that Grant was asking police not to use a Taser. ”He said to them, ‘Don’t Tase me; I have a 4-year-old daughter,’ ” Burris said. Seconds later, police put Grant face-down on the ground. Grant appears to struggle. One of the officers kneels on Grant as another officer stands up, tugs at his gun, unholsters it and fires a shot into Grant’s back. Burris said the bullet went through Grant’s back and then ricocheted off the floor and through his lungs. Grant, who has a 4-year-old daughter, died seven hours later, KTVU reported. ”I couldn’t believe it. We was already following directions and everything, and they shot him,” Fernando Anicete, one of the young men with Grant, told KTVU. Burris has spoken to witnesses who claim that Grant was trying to resolve the situation. ”He had been telling people to calm down. ‘Be cool. Just do what they tell you to do.”
