Trump Claims Germany Paying ‘Far Less’ For NATO Then They Should, Promises Change
While President Donald Trump was recently overseas- and didn’t tweet a whole lot while there- since returning, he’s returned to Twitter in full force, with numerous tweets issued over the weekend regarding “fake news,” North Korea, and more.
This morning, Trump took to Twitter to talk about Germany.
Specifically, he claimed that, “We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military.”
“Very bad for U.S.,” he added. “This will change.”
Interestingly, this tweet comes after news from the Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke out last week, implying that Germany- and Europe- could no longer rely on the USA. Her specific statement as detailed by The Independent was that, “We Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands… the times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days…we need to know we must fight for our own future as Europeans for our destiny.”
Merkel said these things after last week when Trump was the only world leader present at the G7 Summit not to sign the Paris Climate Deal. The Paris Climate Deal was signed in 2015 and is a United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change deal that has to do with global warming.
It will be interesting to see if Trump adds anything more on Germany and if Merkel responds. We’ll be sure to keep you posted if he- or she- does.
