EXCLUSIVE: NBA star Thabo Sefolosha – NYPD Demand $50 Million Battle over Alleged Violent Arrest Be Thrown Out
The Dirty can exclusively reveal NBA star Thabo Sefolosha is being blasted by the NYPD in his $50 million suit accusing them of falsely arresting him outside a NY club … with the defendants accusing him of causing his own arrest by refusing to leave the scene of a crime despite numerous demands by officers.
Last year, the NBA star sued 5 NYPD officers involved in a violent arrest outside a NYC nightclub.
He explained the incident caused him to suffer severe injuries including a broken fibula and ligament damage. Sefolosha believed the incident was a racial matter and referenced his African descent and the hoodie he was wearing that night.
Sefolosha was charged with obstructing justice, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct … but was later cleared of all charges. He sued seeking up to $50 million in damages.
The NYPD and officers fired back denying they violently arrested the NBA star. They blamed him for any injuries due to his own negligent conduct. They demanded the suit be thrown out.
Then recently, the City of New York filed docs demanding the judge grant summary judgement and dismiss the case ASAP. They explain on the night in question … police responded to the club for a possible stabbing outside and once they arrived they ordered everyone to leave.
They claim Thabo was with a friend and 2 other women and despite numerous demands for them to leave the scene … police claim the NBA star refused even after six-ten warnings. The police say eventually an officer went to arrest him but while they were placing him in cuffs he continued to try and put money into his front pockets without explanation. To make matters worse Thabo’s friend tried to intervene and made physical contact with an officer.
The defendants say they were within their rights to arrest Thabo and point out the NBA star has yet to identity the officer he claims repeatedly kicked him in the back during the arrest. They are demanding the judge not allow the case to continue on and dismiss the entire case.
