EXCLUSIVE: Ron Miscavige Talks The Church of Scientology’s Obsession With Celebrities
During our extensive conversation with Ron Miscavige, the father of COB (Chairman of The Board) of the Church of Scientology David Miscavige, one thing we were curious to know was why the Church seemed to be obsessed with celebrities and having them in the fold.
“Celebrities are considered to be opinion leaders,” Ron exclusively shared with us. “In other words, if you were to hear somebody like Tom Cruise was a Scientologist, you as a fan of his would think I want to be like Tom Cruise. I’m going to check out Scientology. Or Isaac Hayes. Well, I’m a fan of Isaac Hayes, I’d like to see what he’s doing. Oh he’s doing Scientology? I’d like to check it out.”
“That was the sole reason for getting celebrities involved so that they could influence a lot more people than just Joe the barber talking to his friend out in the street,” Ron continued. “And it worked. A lot of people would come in and try it out.”
However, Ron thinks this may be less of an important thing in a modern age, as he told us that, “With the advent of the internet, it’s a little different story. Now you can look at the internet and see all of the abuses that the church has been guilty of over the years. And it almost doesn’t matter who is in. People look at this stuff and you say do I want to get involved in that? I don’t think so.”
Make sure to stay tuned, as there’s still even more to come from our conversation with Ron.
