EXCLUSIVE: Wiz Khalifa – Reaches Settlement in Legal Battle Accusing Him of Ripping Off Unknown Musician
The Dirty can report (first as usual) that Wiz Khalifa has settled the legal battle accusing him of illegally profiting off an unknown musician’s work … with the rapper reaching a confidential deal with the man … which will bring the entire legal battle to a close.
Last year, the rapper was sued by a musician named Yury Merman in New York Court over his hit song “iSay”. Merman claimed he went to a recording studio in Pittsburgh named ID Labs back in 2011. The musician needed help editing his track “La Plafond”.
The producers helped him edit the music and saved the final cut to his laptop. He says Wiz is a frequent patron of ID Labs and worked with several producers from the studio. Many of them have credits on the rapper’s songs.
Merman heard Wiz’s track “iSay” and immediately knew the producers had used a significant portion of his song and illegally sampled it … never asking for permission or paying him a dime.
He claimed he text the producer who helped him and was promised he would be paid for Wiz sampling his work. The musician finally sued after a year passed and he never saw a dime or song credit … seeking unspecified damages for the music theft.
Wiz had yet to respond to the allegations in court.
Then on January 6th, docs were filed in the case explaining Wiz and the musician had reached a settlement in the case. The rapper reached a confidential deal where Merman will dismiss all claims against him accusing him of copyright infringement and screwing him out of royalties. The terms of the agreement will remain sealed.
